Functional Leadership

Much of leadership research focused on transformational and charismatic leadership. Even more so, leadership development has tried to teach leaders how to be charismatic—with mixed results.

Another approach might be that of functional leadership (Zaccaro et al. 2001): The leader's main tasks are information search and structuring, information use in problem solving, managing personnel resources, managing material resources. Based on this approach, leadership development could focus on teaching leaders how to fulfill these functions in their organization.
